Dan Thurston

Dan studied at the University of Nottingham as a Graduate Entry Medic, finishing in 2012. He completed his Foundation & Core Surgical Training in the East Midlands, before moving to the West Midlands for higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedics. He is coming to the end of registrar training now, and is due to start his fellowship in Upper Limb Surgery at the highly regarded Derby Shoulder & Elbow Unit in October 2024. He has always been deeply invested in teaching and education throughout his career, having attained a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Nottingham in 2015, and is a faculty member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, regularly teaching on Basic Surgical Skills courses across the country. During his registrar training, he has regularly delivered formal and ad hoc teaching sessions to a wide variety of learners, from medical students to GP trainees, Foundation doctors to fellow Registrars, consistently receiving highly positive feedback. He currently serves as the Education Lead for the Birmingham Orthopaedic Network and has established several T&O-themed courses to encourage more trainees into Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery, including a careers fair day for medical students and Foundation doctors with consultant-led talks and practical workshops, and a well-established national ST3 interview course which has helped dozens of aspiring surgeons achieve a National Training Number in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery.

Naeil Lotfi

Naeil graduated from the esteemed Red Brick University of Birmingham in 2011. Since then, he has remained in the West Midlands to undertake his basic and higher surgical training. Naeil obtained his Certificate of Completion of Training in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery in 2023, and is currently working as a Hand Surgery Fellow at the prestigious Pulvertaft Unit at the Royal Derby Hospital. Teaching has always been a passion of Naeil’s; During his Foundation & Core training years, he regularly organised and delivered local teaching programmes for his peers, as well as acting as faculty for the West Midlands Core Training Interview course. Prior to commencing higher surgical training, Naeil was a faculty member in the anatomy department at his alma mater for a year, consistently delivering exemplary formal and ad-hoc teaching to medical, dental and biomedical sciences students. His dedication was recognised when he was presented with the award for Recognition of Excellence in Medical Education 2015/2016 by the Dean of the Medical & Dental School. Throughout his higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedics, Naeil’s enthusiasm for delivering high quality teaching has only continued to grow. He remains a faculty member at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, regularly teaching on Advanced Trauma Life Support courses and, following his success at the FRCS examination, Naeil has been regularly invited to share his insights on FRCS revision courses.

OrthoPro Education is the product of a shared dream; Dan & Naeil have worked together for 6 years, and studied for their FRCS exam together. It was during this time they realised they shared the same passion for medical education & teaching. They established OrthoPro as a platform for lifelong learning in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery, to provide the tools necessary for orthopaedic trainees to feel confident and prepared for what their future career holds, from CT to CCT
